This unbuilt project provides a dedicated area for weight lifting attached to the existing YMCA building in Ellsworth, ME.
As exercise routines become more sophisticated, gymnasium planning strategies that generically provide all forms of training the same physical requirements, and therefore can co-exist within the same or similar spaces, become obsolete.
This realization led the YMCA to work with to create a new, dedicated weight training room. The room features not only access to daylight, but also the ability to open up the space to the outdoors. Tall ceilings and an eight-inch slab help with sound attenuation. A dedicated energy recovery ventilator keeps the weight room atmosphere separated from the rest of the facility, increasing overall hygiene and minimizing opportunities for cross-contamination.
