This project is an opportunity to explore ideas about the home as a castle, the nature of a view house, and the use of concrete as a major architectural element.
The program includes a shooting range, indoor pool and gymnasium, double-height great room, guest wing, and a hot tub in a turret. The house is just under 10,000 square feet, including the three-car garage.
The principal material is concrete, used both structurally and as an expressive element. The house exterior responds to the cold climate with triple-glazed windows and four inches of exterior continuous insulation. Even though the view, and many of the windows, face north, we were able to have a large amount of the exterior face south. This was accomplished by using a wedge-shaped floor plan that shrinks the northern exposure.
